Occupational requirement

The employer has stated that being a practising Muslim is an occupational requirement for this role, under Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010. No reason given. The job description says staff must follow the beliefs and practices of Ahl-us-Sunnah.

What this means for applicants

The law allows a religious organisation to require that a role is held by someone of a particular religion when that is genuinely needed for the work, for example leading prayers or teaching religious studies. The employer must explain why, and we check that they have before the job goes live. For any other role, employers can't ask about your religion or belief.

About the role

Quwwat-ul-Islam Girls' School, an independent Islamic school in Forest Gate, needs a part-time Nursery Teaching Assistant for its early years department, working with children aged three to five.

You will support the Early Years teacher to deliver the EYFS, helping plan activities, carry out observations and assessments, and keep online learning journals up to date. Day to day you will organise the classroom, encourage good behaviour, confidence and independence, act as a key person for nursery children, build good relationships with parents and support school events and trips.

It suits a caring practitioner with a Level 3 early years qualification, sound EYFS knowledge, a paediatric first aid certificate and experience of working with young children.

Full details and how to apply are on the employer's website.
