Occupational requirement

The employer has stated that being a practising Muslim is an occupational requirement for this role, under Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010. The employer states that being a practising Muslim is a genuine occupational requirement for this religious leadership post under Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010.

What this means for applicants

The law allows a religious organisation to require that a role is held by someone of a particular religion when that is genuinely needed for the work, for example leading prayers or teaching religious studies. The employer must explain why, and we check that they have before the job goes live. For any other role, employers can't ask about your religion or belief.

About the role

Chelmsford Muslim Society is recruiting a full-time, permanent Associate Imam, the entry grade in its published imams' framework. The post is 40 hours a week on a rota that includes evenings, weekends and prayer times.

You will lead daily prayers, Taraweeh and Jumu'ah, deliver khutbahs from prepared material, teach children using established curricula and co-teach adult classes. Pastoral and youth work, outreach at open days and accurate record keeping are also part of the job, with sensitive matters passed to senior colleagues.

It suits a recent graduate of 'Alimiyyah or equivalent study who is a Hafidh, recites well and genuinely welcomes observation, coaching and feedback. Interviews are on 15 November 2026.

Full details and how to apply are on the employer's website.
